What is a tungsten billet?
A tungsten billet is a solid, cylindrical block of tungsten or tungsten alloy, used as a semi-finished blank for further machining, forming, or alloying. Tungsten billets are compact, easy to store and transport, and are typically supplied in standard sizes or manufactured to bespoke specifications, depending on the finished component they’ll be used to produce, to suit the customer’s specific request.
Because a tungsten billet can be precisely cut, drawn, or machined, it forms the starting point for a wide range of finished tungsten products, including tungsten wire, tungsten bars, and specialist components used in high-temperature and high-density applications.
Properties of our tungsten billets
Tungsten billets share the same special properties as pure tungsten metal, making them suitable for some of the most demanding industrial environments.
- Exceptionally high melting point – Around 3,410°C, the highest of any metal.
- High density – Comparable to gold, ideal for weighting, ballast and shielding applications.
- Excellent hardness – Hardness that can exceed steel, with strong wear resistance.
- Low thermal expansion – Dimensionally stable even under extreme heat.
- Good thermal and electrical conductivity, plus strong resistance to corrosion.
When alloyed with other metals, tungsten billets pass these properties on to the finished alloy – boosting melting point, hardness, density, and corrosion resistance.

Tungsten billet sizes, grades, and bespoke options
We supply tungsten billets in a range of standard diameters and lengths, and can manufacture bespoke tungsten billets to your exact drawing or specification – including custom tungsten alloy grades, where a specific density, hardness, or tungsten content is required for your project.
Whether you need a small batch of prototype tungsten billets or an ongoing supply for production, our team can advise on the most suitable size, grade, and finish for your application. No job is too big or small, and we offer no minimum order values.
Common uses and applications of tungsten billets
Tungsten billets act as a versatile blank and are commonly used for:
- Drawing into tungsten wire for lighting filaments and heating elements
- Rolling or machining into tungsten bars, rods and sheet products
- Manufacturing rocket nozzles, furnace components and other high-temperature tooling
- Radiation shielding and ballast applications, thanks to tungsten’s exceptional density
- Cutting into precise amounts for blending into tungsten alloys, including tungsten heavy alloys and superalloys
- Producing dense, slimline components such as professional tungsten dart billets
