Tantalum is a shiny, silver metal, first discovered in 1802. Due to its ductility, it can be manipulated in various ways, to create a diverse range of tantalum parts and fittings. These parts are suitable for many different industrial applications and are available to purchase, here, at Special Metals.
Dependent on your needs, you can either choose from our standard sizes or have unique tantalum parts made bespoke-to-order. We strive to meet your exact specification and we’re happy to take on any project, no matter how big or small. Simply give us a call to discuss your application with our team of experts and we will produce a high-quality tantalum product that is perfect for you.
What is tantalum used for?
Tantalum metal has many useful properties and, as such, it lends itself well to a large number of different uses. These can be broken down into four main categories.
High-temperature applications – thanks to its excellent thermal conductivity, the metal is regularly employed for high-temperature applications and used to create heating elements, vacuum furnace parts and more.
Portable electronics – due to a dielectric (i.e. insulating) oxide layer on the surface of tantalum, it has a high capacitance per volume – and is a suitable option for portable electronics, such as mobile phones and computers.
Chemicals – it demonstrates high-corrosion resistance, therefore is a popular choice for handling corrosive chemicals
Medical industry – tantalum also has no known biological role. It is a completely non-toxic material and, as a result, it’s commonly used within the medical industry for surgical implants and medical devices.
