What is Hafnium?

With a melting point of approximately 2230°C and a boiling point of around 4602°C, hafnium is a transitional metal element with the chemical symbol Hf, and the atomic number of 72. It’s normal appearance is that of a toughened shiny silver metal. Hafnium is renowned to be used in various industries such as electronics and nuclear power.

It’s Applications

Hafnium is exclusively consistent in the electronics industry due to its frequent uses. It can be found in the use of light bulbs, capacitors and cathodes. Hafnium can be found to be used in alloys for turbine blades for the likes of aerodynamics and industrial gas uses. It is also effective in the area of the nuclear industry due its property of impressive neutron absorption. This enables it to acceptable in the use of some nuclear based objects such as reactor control rods and submarines. This assists in the maintaining of fission reactions which consists of splitting atoms to create energy.

Hafnium is eligible to be alloyed with a number of other metals such as iron, tantalum and niobium (the last two which we are suppliers of at Special Metal Fabrications) to name a few.
